Icterus neonatorum; its incidence and cause.

چکیده
In spite of the frequency of icterus neonatorum and the work done to elucidate the problems connected with it, there still remains much divergence of opinion regarding its incidence and pathogenesis. Estimates of the incidence vary from 40 to 80 per cent. of the nYewborn. Since the detection of jaundice is influenced by many factors, such as the vascularity of the skin and the nature of the light in which the observation is made, and since there are several definitions of jaundice, such varying estimates are not surprising. Icterus neonatorum has been ascribed to excessive haemolysis of the blood, to immaturity of the liver, to increased viscosity of the bile, and to the breakdown of the mother's blood in the placenta. The hypothesis that the jaundice was hepatic in origin has been replaced by one that it is caused by excessive haemolysis. Since bilirubin is a product of the breakdown of haemoglobin, all jaundice may be said to be the result of haemolysis, but the evidence of excessive haemolysis as a cause of icterus neonatorum is inconclusive. During the past year, in the course of biochemical and haematological investigations of haemolysis, there occurred an opportunity to study newborn babies, and an investigation of icterus neonatorum was undertaken, (1) to determine the incidence, (2) to try to detect any difference in the rate of haemolysis in jaundiced and non-jaundiced infants, and (3) to seek evidence of impairment or immaturity of liver function.

Nuclear Jaundice in Neonatal
It is a well-known fact that after familial jaundice in the new-born there not rarely remain certain cerebral symptoms which are related to a particular localization of the icteric staining in the brain substance, especially in the basal ganglia. The first description of icterus gravis neonatorum was given by Orthl', and the familial character was stressed by Schmorl2. In recent years a number ...

متن کاملUrinary potassium excretion in newborns with and without icterus neonatorum.
The precise mechanism underlying the common 'physiological' jaundice of the newborn remains uncertain (Goldbloom and Gottlieb, 1929; Billing and Lathe, 1956; Lathe and Walker, 1957; Nelson, 1964). This study was based upon a previous suggestion that increased haemolytic activity operates in some cases, and that an increased urinary potassium concentration is one expression of this, continuing a...
متن کاملNeonatal Adrenal Hemorrhage presenting as Prolonged Hyperbilirubinemia.
Adrenal hemorrhage is quiet uncommon in neonates with reported incidence of 0.2%-0.55% [1]. In neonates, adrenal glands are large in size and have abundant vascular supply, so more prone to hemorrhage. Clinical manifestations may vary from relatively benign as anemia, flank mass, discoloration of scrotum, neonatal jaundice to life threatening addisonian crisis depending upon the extent of hemor...
متن کاملFormulation and Clinical Evaluation of Povidone-Iodine Ophthalmic Drop
Ophthalmia neonatorum is generally defined as conjunctivitis occurring within one month of life. The sources of this infection are environmental organisms or the organisms colonized in the birth canal. Untreated infection can cause blindness, especially if the corresponding organisms areNeisseria gonorrhoeae, or Chlamydia trachomatis. Povidone-iodine ophthalmic solution is an effective antib...
